Tex Mex Grill on Lee Hwy - Report

I've never met a plate of Tex Mex food that I liked - until now. Ground beef, soft flour tortillas, beans, and rice. Very oily, huge portions, and some serious eatin'. The folks here are from Guatemala, and they seem to understand a thing or two about good food. The beef is quite plain tasting, no red sauce unless you put it on yourself. The beans and rice really hit the spot, which is a rarity. If you are in the area, you might want to give it a try.

They also serve chips and salsa beforehand, nothing special, but not actively bad either. This puts them way ahead of the game.

Lee Hwy east of George Mason in N. Arlington.

I tried the Tex Mex place today and it was pretty decent. I have been trying to find decent sandwiches or tacos since December and although I did have a bit of a laugh over the kababs still being on the menu, I did notice that they had fish tacos too.
Ordered two of them with rice and pico de gallo and I am happy with my $7.50 lunch! The tacos did come out with flour tortillas but I asked the waiter/cook/busboy/ owner (?) and he said he would use corn if I ask for it next time. The fish is probably tilapia, grilled nicely with a little char and still juicy. The pico de gallo is fragrant with chopped onion dominating the tomato, pretty tasty but I wouldn't care to talk to anyone face to face before I chew some gum... Rice is yellow and a bit soft, but it goes well with the pico and the fish.
Saw an overloaded burrito go by, buried under cheese and looking fairly run of the mill, but good. The refried beans look fair, but I didn't try them.
All in all, a pretty good fish taco, well worth the price. It is a 1 man show, so don't expect lightening fast service, but I will be returning for more tacos.

I had been wondering about this place since I saw their grand opening coupon in the mail... I guess I still don't know, but for that cheap will probably find out.

So just what is it that you had? The Taco Platter from the "Burritos" menu?

        The Mexican Specialties menu

        indeed has kabobs.

I definitely had a taco platter. I don't recall the menu at the restaurant being so 'sophisticated' as the onlien version.

Ever been to La Tolteca in Rehoboth? They do their ground beef without red sauce and I really like it. I'm just wondering if Tex Mex Grill does it similarly.

Fortunately, it's not expensive to find out!

I haven't been to La Tolteca. The beef at Tex Mex Grill has a very clean, plain beefy flavor. Not all covered up. Normally, I would not go near a ground beef taco, but this was quite good. But make sure you use plenty of napkins. It comes out oily.

What possessed you to try this place? They do kabobs too! That would've made me run for the border. :)

A Tex Mex place that does kabobs would make me run the other way too. Sounds like an identity crisis...

I didn't see any kabobs on the menu. I believe it was a kabob place before the Tex Mex, so maybe there is still an old sign up. Or maybe I just didn't peruse the menu closely enough.

Steve, interesting report. I don't much care for Tex Mex food either, but the food you described sounds pretty good (or I'm just hungry :)). Maybe it's the Guatemalan influence of the cooks. Glad you liked it.

Someday I will get myself down to Texas for great beef bbq and Tex Mex food. Two foodstuffs that are dismal 'round these parts.
