Birmingham: Wild Game / Exotic Meats

Jannae Sep 22, 2009 03:49 AM

Birmingham, AL Chowhounds- Do we have any places in town serving elk, yak, kangaroo, wild boar, venison, or any variety of game meats or wild fowl?

We'd be willing to travel outside of Birmingham if someone has a really good recommendation.

Highland's Bar & Grill will sometimes offer venison during hunting season, but I don't think it's a regular feature on their menu.

The same is true for Hot and Hot Fish Club and Standard Bistro. They sometimes have quail, venison, rabbit, wild boar, etc. on the menu during fall and winter, but I would call ahead as those items are not on the menu all of the time.

I don't know of anyone in town serving yak or kangaroo, but I do recall seeing elk on the menu at one point at some place (I can't recall where).

Thanks for the tip. I checked out the online menu for Highland's, and they do have venison and quail on the menu for the 19th.

Is there anywhere we can purchase the meat for home cooking?

That's the route I've been taking for the past few years. We've purchased kangaroo, and emu from Fossil Farms out of NJ (www.fossilfarms.com). I've been satisfied with their prompt attention to the orders and packaging of the meats. We get venison, quail, and other Alabama wild game from the hunters in the family, but I was looking to see how some of our local chefs prepare the more unusual meats.

Shouldn't you serve kangaroo in a pita pocket?
