Asian Cafe in Winslow, ME
Visited Saturday, September 19th 2009, early evening
The Asian Cafe serves a mixture of Thai, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese cuisine.
I (He): seaweed salad, Asian crispy duck
She: crab Rangoon, glass noodle salad with chicken and lime vinaigrette (can't remember the name)
I liked the seaweed salad although the taste was slightly unusual to me. I'd only had crispy seaweed before and this was soft so I can't give a comparative judgment of quality. She had a taste but didn't like it.
The crab Rangoon were crispy but the filling didn't seem very generous.
She was expecting the glass noodles in her salad to be fried. They were soft and she, being very sensitive to texture in food, didn't like it, describing the texture as being "like overcooked pasta". However, the lime vinaigrette was nice. I tried her noodles and found that with the vinaigrette it was a bit like eating a stringy lime marmalade.
I didn't like my crispy duck. It did have a light, crispy coating but the meat was very dry.
Overall, with two of the dishes being disappointing we'll not be visiting again and we wouldn't recommend the restaurant. However, it was busy so other people obviously do like it. We went on somebody else's recommendation. Perhaps we should have had the drunken noodle he enthused about.
I can't fault the service, which was efficient, or the atmosphere, which was very pleasant.. The prices are typical for the kind of restaurant. Our meal, including a soda and a thai sweet tea, came to around $37 before the tip.
I'm still in shock reading about such a place in Winslow.
Just one comment: Your description of the glass noodles in the salad sounds pretty standard.
Do you all have a food blog? I'd love to see your thoughts on other restaurants in the Waterville area.

Thanks, I've seen the place on the way to Big G's and wondered about it. How extensive was the Korean menu?

I am sorry your expereince was less than expected. I am a former Bostonian and moved nearby many years ago. I have eaten at Asian Cafe probaly 30 times, with many guests and family. We have always not only found the food excellent, even the whole fried fish, but the servings are always more than you could eat at a single sitting. Please try it again! Their wine and beer prices are very reasonable, too.
