Blues and Chili Festival, Gastown

I've just come back from the Blues and Chili Festival and along with the good music, there were 18 Gastown restaurants contending. Diamond, Alibi Room, Irish Heather and loads of names I've seen here offered up $1.00 samplers and 8 oz. cups for $3.00 - not bad in my book.

I tried Boneta's chicken and pork rib one with chipotle. I tried I-forget-who's three bison number, , with ground bison, pulled bison and a cubed version of same with beer and ancho chile and another less interesting one which I rushed to as it was the only one open after the thing began two hours earlier.

The chilis were whisked off to the judges and Deacons was declared the winner by one point.

Just a heads up if anybody is interested in blues and/or chili. It's the first year and they plan to do it next year.

  1. whoa, what a combo. Got to keep this in mind for next year.

    1. They need to step up their marketing because I've never heard of the festival! I totally would have gone, and I was even in the area yesterday! Dang it!

      1. I got there early so I was able to taste 6 of the chilis. My favourite was La Casita. Their chili was the closest to what I think a good chili looks and tastes like. The chef incorporated his french culinary background with an indian vibe and spanish sensibility.

Very rich and deep flavours. Excellent.

Nice sleuthing and reports, guys, but I'm with flowbee -- why did we hear zip about this?? It's not like I don't spend hours on the web reading about food events :-). Maybe next year...

Yeah flowbee and grayelf. You are quite right. It was hardly publicized at all. I guess I assume everyone reads the Georgia Straight miscellaneous section like I do! When you did go on the internet to get more info, there wasn't much - maybe two sparse entries.

I could kick myself for not putting it on here - it's a natural.

I imagine there'll be a lot more there next year and thinking about it the GS should have written a blurb about it. It was for a charity after all. Someone slipped up there.

But oh, well, as you say 'maybe next year'.

If I Google "Blues Chili Festival Gastown " - I get this exact thread as number 1 on the search results. The crack Chowhound technical team are masters of the Search Engine Optimization, but still...I would expect the actual event's own site to be in the top 10. I read the Georgia Straight - but only a couple of sections.

I'm not a Chili guy so it would have gone under my radar anyway.

I didn't hear about this until after either (through Jay Jones of the upcoming Pourhouse's twitter account) and I live in Gastown and love chili! Oh well, I was climbing mountains instead. But, sounded like a good time had by all!

i knew of it because i saw the chef from the revewl room cooking his chili on bt, but i also am not a fan of the stuff, and for the most part the only blues i like is just guitar, no singing

Okay, so if anyone hears of anything Chowworthy in Western Canada, post about it ahead of time -- problem solved :-).
