Hunting for the best Fried Chicken In San Francisco

Lookin for the best Fried Chicken and Soul Food in the Bay Area....Any Suggestions

I hesitate to recommend something I have not sampled, but the fried chicken at Front Porch gets good reviews. I've been there, like the place a lot, just have not personally sampled the chicken. Yet.

The fried chicken at Pizzaiolo was some of the best I ever had. A huge breast that had flavor throughout. Crisp shell surrounding very moist meat. There was a sweetness but also a hint of Indian spice and flavors. The rest of the meal was incredible too- pizza, fried green tomatoes, gnocchi with oxtail ragu, buccatini with tuna, etc...

I personally will never return for the Front Porch fried chicken - the marinade/brine was overpoweringly unpleasant; the chicken was over-cooked. Not high on my fried-goodness meter. You can tell me if this was a fluke.

I really enjoyed the fried chicken from Little Skillet.

I'm from L.A. and if I had the time and resources, I'd probably fly to S.F. all the time JUST for the fried chicken at 1300 Fillmore. It is DREAMY...

Wow, Banquisha - you are alone as most here in San Francisco would eat anywhere BUT 1300 Fillmore. It is my 'hood and now we have Gussie's Chicken & Waffles on the adjacent corner. Want to talk about great fried chicken???

I just went to Gussie's for lunch..I had the chicken and "light" corn meal waffles.......my findings...the chicken was previously fried and reheated (dry and flavorless) very much like Powell's its' predescessor.
The light waffles were leaden, and after two dippings in the brown sugar syrup its treacly flavor was bitter and cloying..
has anyone had a better experience, perhaps at dinner? Last week I went to Nellie's in Oakland, and my experience as always was totally different...freshly fried..juicy and tender chicken...great greens etc....
I live 5 minutes drive from Gussie's..I would love to love it...they have grits, and biscuits, and honey corn bread, all of which I would like to try ..if there is any hope for it at all....the place is beautiful, the waitress was bubbly and welcoming....anybody??? Good experience, was mine a fluke?

I have had great experiences at Gussie's and am sorry to hear of the bad chicken. The only thing I've ordered for lunch has been the chicken livers and those have always been fresh. But the chicken I've eaten has only been in the evening.

Thanks...I'll give it a try in the evening!

My two favorites so far are Firefly in Noe Valley (not soul food though) and Hard Knox in dogpatch. HK is a soul food place, FF is more of a local, Cal cuisine place.

Is it just the fried chicken that is good at Hard Knox? I ate there when it first opened and had one of the worst meals in my life there, but didn't try the chicken. This is the one on Clement.

I like the $6 burger cooked-to-order medium-rare with one side of choice (huge pile of fries -or, my fave = greens... the list of sides is full of the usual carb-friendly options like mac 'n cheese, potato salad, french fries, sweet potato fries... or, coleslaw, greens and more.
What made you so very miserable at the Hard Knox on Clement? I'd stay away, if it were the worst meal in my life!

I have found all of the main entree dishes to be very good and the sides to be average but not bad. The fried chicken is their best dish. I go to the original one on 3rd street, not sure how it compares to the new location.
