Hi 'hounds

In an earlier thread (linked below) I requested Taiwanese food for a friend of mine from Taipei who has been traveling around the world for 5 months and is looking for a taste of home.

In my earlier thread, someone mentioned that all of the nicer Taiwanese places have moved to Rowland Heights-- does anyone (Jerome? Beuller? :-) know of any of these places? Would love to take her to a great spot that reminds her of home.

I'm quite surprised that in a city which plays Taiwanese satellite TV that there are not more taiwanese specialty restaurants

Thanks everyone!

Mr. Taster

One of my Taiwanese friends hipped me to Supreme Dragon. We usually go in a group of 4, and get one of the set course meals, which includes steamed pork dumplings, a whole halibut, soups and a couple other items for $16 total (not per person). On the divey side, but unless you're trying to impress a date or a client, who cares?

Same friend showed me Q Noodle House, which specializes in noodles & tofu dishes. The cold, smoked tofu w/ oyster sauce is oddly delicious. Scallion pancakes are tasty here. Many stir fried mifun dishes to choose from.

Jonathon Gold wrote about Chicken Garden in his book, but I've never been. They're a chicken specialist, and do a good version of three cup chicken. He called the Burning Wine Chicken "the most specatacular chicken dish in existence," in the firey, visual sense of "spectacle."

Din Tai Fung is well known on this board. They're based in Taipei, so your friend may already be familiar with them.

I ate at King's Palace with Chowpatty, Thi, DanaB and Robert Lu. I'm told this is high end-y Taiwanese with a strong Shanghai influence. The fried crab with garlic made me weep, but not everyone dug it. Pork pump was good, but not as impressive to me as Mei Long Village's version down the street. The winter melon with crab roe was subtle and delicious, and I think everyone enjoyed it. Chowpatty wrote more about it on her blog, here:

Chicken Garden closed down a couple of years ago. Fortunately, there's a new Taiwanese place a couple of doors down called Taiwan Taste. Actually, Taiwan Taste has two locations in that shopping center--one is a sit down place up front, and they also have a fast food place behind the Hong Kong supermarket.

Hey Taster.
Am out of town and just checking in at a library. There were a few places in Great Mall on San Gabriel and Valley. I'm away from my stuff and I don't have the time rightnow but, if it doesn't have to be a surprize, have your friend look at this page on Rowland Heights and scan through the Chinese part and she might find a place you can discover and let us all know about.
A caveat: am not a huge fan of Taiwanese food, although I like Fujian food a lot. Maybe I just haven't had the best of luck - the blood soup was a turnoff, and the three cup chicken was ok.
The computer here is pretty slow, so go to chineseypages.com and look for the restaurant info. I may have posted it here before - you can click on Rowland Heights specifically once you get to the restaurant page.
If you browse the chowhound search page, the link might show up. Sorry I can't do any better right now.

I like Country Bistro Restaurant, 1380 S. Fullerton Rd., #105, Rowland Heights, PH: 626-839-9889.
I is not as good as it was a year ago, the owner got sick and the quality suffered from this and there was change in one of chefs, because some of the items on the menu just were not the same. It was one of my favorite resturants and it is lower down on my list now, but it is still very good and is high quality Taiwanese food. If you want Taiwanese snack food this is not the place for you because they don't make it.
