whole wheat berries to grind on a home mill
i am new to the boston area and am looking for whole wheat berries to make bread. i have looked at the health harvest coop on state street in JP and they do not have them. we live in brookline. does anyone have any leads?
Any Whole Foods would have them in the bulk bins, and probably also packed up from Bob's Red Mill. I am surprised that Harvest Coop does not have them.

I can't say for sure, but I think when I looked in the WH in Swampscott they didn't have them. Seems like everytime I look for something there, they don't have it... (ranting a bit here).
I found some (this was a couple of years ago) at the little Indian grocery store in Malden on Pleasant St. (beginning, near Main). Ground it in my old Vitamix (now gone, RIP my sweet stainless steel babe!) and made a great loaf of bread.
Didn't buy it again because I was concerned about using wheat from India - it's not China, but I'd still rather buy wheat that's grown in the US.

I am so surprised you had problems finding whole wheat berries. They are at all of the WFs that are near me (Cambridge locations, Bedford, Woburn), both in the bulk bin and in bags (Bob's Red Mill). You can easily get them via mail order too. I would never worry about the quality of anything I got from King Arthur Flour (yes they sell wheat berries). You can also order directly from Bob's Red Mill. If you want good stuff, but don't care about organic, I can also recommend Wheat Montana for ordering over the Internet. Their wheat is grown in ... Montana.... and in my experience makes wonderful bread.

I have heard tell that the Armenian markets in Watertown have whole wheat berries.
