ling cod
Does anyone have any information about where I could either eat ling cod in a restaurant in the NYC area or buy some in the NYC area? My daughter caught one in Alaska and it is wonderful to eat. Ling cod, by the way, is not in the cod family.

Ling is caught in the winter when fishing deep sea for cod. Whiting runs together with both. Whiting (merluzzo) is delicious, Cod is a pretty tastless fish but makes good salted bacalao and good fish cakes. Ling was always considered a "garbage fish", kind of like a salt water catfish. I never ate one , we always threw them back. When cut open they stink pretty bad. But these daus people eat skate , so why not ling. I recommend going to the Sheepshead bay dock in December and January and you can get them for almost free.

Ling Cod......I was always told Ling was a large Whiting Fish. If that's what your looking for, it a popular fish with Korean Fishmongers and or markets. Usually they will offer a special deal on a five pound purchase, cleaned and filleted. Usually, these type of markets will also have a retail food counter where you can purchase fried fish sandwiches and sea food plates very inexpensively. The whiting sandwiches will have three fillets for less than $3 in most cases.
sorry, but I cannot help you with a specific market.....hopefully others will be able to help out.
