Staying Downtown at Marriot: Need recs

I am visiting Philadelphia for the first time and am staying at the Marriot Downtown. I want to try a Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich and some classic Philly cuisine. Street food is fine. Recommendations?

  1. cross the street to the Reading Terminal MArket. No stellar cheesestaek place but get a roast pork sandwich with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe from DiNics - the "other" Philly sandwich. Search this board for lots of threads about our favs at the Market!

    1. You will be a block from a very good Chinatown.

      1. Bassetts ice cream in Reading Terminal market is a MUST. The Gadzooks flavor was "created" by a local radio station and is delicious!

        1. have some scrapple for breakfast, and grab a street vendor pretzel.

What is scrapple and where do I get it?

Scrapple is all the non-premium parts of a hog, ground up very fine and highly seasoned, then formed into a soft block. It's a very unique flavor. Scrapple is usually sliced and fried. You can get it at one of the butcher shops at the Reading Terminal. Most grocery stores sell it. Many diner-type restaurants have it on the menu. It's normally served at breakfast.

It's worth noting that the bulk of scrapple is really just pork stock mixed with corn meal, along with all those ground up "non-premium" parts. I had a great aversion to even trying scrapple until I realized it was basically pork flavored cornmeal mush, fried to a crisp. Yum!

Get it prepared, along with eggs, at the Down Home Diner in the Reading Terminal Market.

Do try the pancakes at the Dutch Eating Place at the market. They also have scrapple there (worth trying once...admittedly not my favorite food).

The scrapple at the Dutch Eating Place is the best at Reading Terminal. Try Lee How Fook at 219 N. 11th St. (between Race & Vine Sts.), a two block walk from your hotel. Dim Sum Palace on 11th south of Filbert (one block from your hotel) is an unpretencious place, but surprisingly good. Lee How Fook is a BYOB. There is a state-run Wine & Spirits Shop on 12th St., just across from your hotel, between Filbert & Market St.
