Steamed Clams - Please help me find this restaurant

A number of years ago I found a restaurant that serves steamed clams in the bucket, like we used to eat back east in New England when I was a kid.

The restaurant had sort of a sports bar atmosphere, with TVs on and it was kind of loud with a lot of beer drinkers. I believe we found it on the main drag of one of the beaches we explored that afternoon after going to South Coast Mall.

Does anyone know what restaurant this was and if it still exists?

Thanks for any help!

  1. Could you be thinking of Gladstone's in Malibu? (Probably too far north if you were at SCP.)

      I was also thinking Gladstone's.
They used to have an all-you-can-eat night with clams, but I don't know if they still offer it.

    2. Not sure of where you were but I know they do steamed clams by the bucket at 22nd Street Bar & Grill in San Pedro.

One other possibility that I can think of is the chain "Joe's Crab Shack" which does the type of thing you are talking about: http://www.joescrabshack.com/ and they have a location in Newport Beach, among other places.

      1. i think hooters has steamed clams in a bucket too...

        1. South Coast Plaza is central Orange County, so probably not Gladstones.

Was it a smallish bar with a surf theme? Patio out back? 3d plaster work on the walls done up like a tube wave? I'm guessing it was the Longboard pub on Main Street in Huntington Beach.

During certain times of the year, Longboard brings in steamer clams and lobster from the east coast. AFAIK it's not a year round thing.

What you describe sounds like the closest answer. Yeah, it was a small place, on like a main drag going towards the beach. I don't remember about the patio. I think there was a sit down bar in the back. They said the owner was from back east. The clams were the real deal. This would have been in the fall. Will check in with them to see. Thanks :)

          2. Not in Orange County, but in Santa Monica they have, in a bucket I believe:

            STEAMED EAST COAST CLAMS (2lbs)
Served with clam broth and drawn butter

Santa Monica - New England seafood shack type place might work:

            Newport Beach - The Cannery - I haven't been there in 20 years, so ? In a Bucket ?

            Steamed Black Mussels or Clams
            Herb White Wine Sauce

            1. Might it have been Sam's in Sunset or Seal Beach on PCH?

              1. Years ago there was The Seafood Broiler in Tarzana. They served them in a bucket and they were great. I am not sure if they were a chain and if there was one near South Coast Mall.
