We will be staying at the Peabody for one night- Rhodes visit- 2 high school girls and their moms- where is a nice not too pricey place nearby-walking distance if possible? I know the rendezvous is nearby but we don't want BBQ.

The Majestic on Main St. is within walking distance to The Peabody and it's very reasonable and good. Great ambiance too. Encore is a great choice as well and it's virtually connected to The Peabody. French bistro fare as interpreted by Master Chef Jose Gutierrez. It's a very high design space too. Good breakfast places on the way from Downtown to Rhodes include Quetzal on Union, but since y'all are headed to see Rhodes, I'd highly recommend stopping by Cafe Eclectic on McLean, just a couple blocks West of the Rhodes campus. This is a relatively new spot with great breakfast and lunch foods, housemade baked goods and a soda fountain. It's quite the hot spot for breakfast in Midtown near the Rhodes campus. Also near Rhodes is a relatively new pizza spot - Overton Park Pizze Stone, tucked away on Overton Park in a residential neighborhood.

Thanks so much -will check these all out soon. I am not sure about breakfast b/c we have to be there by 8:30 - ks Cafe Eclectic a quick place- like getting bagel? Lunch is served on campus- then we have to get on the road for a trip back home -5 hours- UGH!!! wish we could be there longer !!

Yes, you could make a quick stop in Cafe Eclectic and grab a muffin, bagel, or house-made doughnut at the bar on your way to campus. I should have included Web sites for you in the first response, so here they are -

thanks so do you like Encore or Majestic better- which would be better with high school girls- is Majestic a little more casual than Encore?

Encore's burger is a little more fancy - Majestic's is good and more your typical burger. I think it depends on what you're going for. I'm thinking the whole ambiance of Majestic would be better for the girls - it is in an old theater and has really cool decor (not theme-y but classy) and also I LOVE their fries - hand cut, they are very good. Majestic is also on S. Main so you get a little tour of Main Street, which is very nice.

My parents live right by Rhodes and we've been members of the gym there. It is a wonderful school - good luck!

thanks Kathryn- My name also and spelled the same way-HAHA! How casual is Majestic- nice jeans or skirt and top? Think we'll try there!! We are excited about the visit- it is the first campus visit- not sure we can get in but want them to see a nice small campus ... I went to a girl's school which really isn't the thing anymore these days.

Majestic ranges from nice jeans/cute top to skirt or casual dress. You'll see a lot of everything.

I hope you enjoy Rhodes. Campus visits can be overwhelming but just take it all in and think about whether they can see themselves there. What I like about Rhodes is that it is a small intimate campus inside a large urban city so you can get the small feel but still have a lot to do.

My friend went to Agnes Scott, which is also an all girls school, and absolutely loved it. It isn't really the thing for everyone these days, you're right, but for some it clicks. She thrived and now is doing an internship in NYC at an art gallery!

Encore's entrees are generally less than $20. A new place called South of Beale is a short walk down Main and looks really good + gets good reviews. Have fun! Rhodes is beautiful.

We just visited Memphis about one month ago, and the two places that we found downtown that were good and not too pricey were the Flying Saucer and Gus' Fried Chicken. The Flying Saucer is a little bit more of a bar featuring several hundred types of beer, but their food was good and very reasonable. That atmosphere will be alright for high school aged girls. It is just around the corner form the Peabody. Gus' Fried Chicken is several blocks away, but was very good and also reasonable. Many Memphis people recommended it as the best in town on Chowhound before we visited Memphis. Don't miss the walking of the ducks at the Peabody!

Encore is very good and very close. Another option would be Automatic Slims, which is right across the street.

A great place that is close is Flying Fish. It is not a "white table cloth" type place, but it is funky and the food is great.
