Chinese Grocery Store EMERGENCY! - New Haven

A good friend of mine who has spent the last three years in Beijing just moved to New Haven with his Chinese wife. She's never left China and is having a terrible time adjusting to America and is desperate for a good Chinese Grocery Store. A marriage hangs in the balance! Help!

Just stopped at Food Star Asian Market at 2295 State Street in Hamden. 3.6 miles from the green. This is just a tenth of a mile up from #1 Fish, which everyone needs to know about! I saw this place many times and never stopped. They even have a little restaurant, though it is all take-out.
It is a clean and nice market, but they do not do fresh fish or meats. The vegetables were nice but a little limited in selection. Prices may be a lot better than J Mart, but the selection is not quite as good.

J Mart has higher prices, but better quality. Hong Kong has low prices, surly staff and chaotic shelves. I prefer JMart but end up at Hong Kong sometimes when I'm in the area. Oriental Pantry is great for Korean/Japanese with decent prices and nice fresh spices. Very nice people, too.

I think Hong Kong is the best with J Mart second. I think there is still an Asian grocer at State and Trumbull. The last time there I wasn't too impressed with anything except their fish. I think Hong Kong's fish and produce will be better. Haven't been in the Oriental Pantry.

Hartford is 30 or so minutes away. What about A Dong Grocery in the Elmwood area?

Asian restaurants are yellow balloons and yellow baskets are markets and grocers. Look at descriptions for the Asian ones.

I second Scargod's recommendation re: the A. Dong Grocery in Elmwood. One must go to Flushing to get a better selection of items.

Thirded, and also check out Appletree just a few minutes away on New Park. I haven't been there in a while but they had great produce (cheap!) and fish.

I like the one in the Ninth Square neighborhood in New Haven. Can't remember the name - across the street from the Indian restaurant Thali on Orange St. The veg are always fresh, the fish has been good and there's a nice variety of condiments and snacks.

The one on Church/Whitney and Trumbull is the Hong Kong grocery, I think it would be the best bet for a newly arrived Chinese person. Although Flushing is really only a little over an hour away, without a doubt the go to place for anything Chinese.

There are a few here in New Haven: Jmart is on Orange Street , there is another whose name I can't remember is on Church near Trumbull St. The Oriental Pantry (?) is also on Orange but on the other side of Elm.
There is also one on the Post Road in MIlford just past the connector to Rt 15.
The one on the Post rd in West Haven has smelled of bad fish the few time I went
