Sandra & Lolita's Tamales
I needed to bring something tasty to a holiday party and the earlier thread on tamales made me crave them. I tried a few from La Moscata (sp?) but found them dry and lacking in flavor. So I decided to try the one that Prof. Salt wrote about, Sandra and Lolitas.
This is a little take-out-only place on Whittier, just east of Atlantic. Took me about 25 minutes on streets from Altadena. There was a line out the door at 9:30 a.m. After 15 mins, I was up.
I ordered two doz tamales:
6 red chile pork
6 red chile chicken
6 green chile pork
6 green chile cheese
The green chile are spicy, the red mild.
All were terrific, very saucy with a good corn flavor to the masa. But the spicy versions were the best. My order of favorites were green chile cheese, green pork, red pork, red chicken.
2 dozen were $25.
They also seem to do a huge business with Menudo on the weekends, though they had a big sign out saying "no menudo today". Lots of people came up with large pots for the soup and were disappointed. Since Mebudo is one of my favorite meals, I have another reason to return.
Give this place a try, they are open at 6 a.m. on weekends.

Boy meets tamale. Boy gets tamale. A long schlep with a happy ending.
Open at 6am and a line out the door at 9:30? No wonder they run out of stuff by the time I drag ass here after lunchtime. I guess it pays to show up early if you want the best of the best.
Myself - I time my visits near lunch so I can also hit Tacos Baja Ensenada.

I thought I would add the address, as it took a little hunting for me to find. Sounds like a great pick-up for my (newly announced) family Christmas party on 12/26.
