Help me identify tropical fruit

I was in Cameroon last week and we stopped at a market along the road. Got roasted plantain and this fruit, which my host didn't know the English name of. The shape of it resembled that of a fresh date, rather oval. It was probably about 3-4 inches long, diameter of approximately 1.5-2 inches. Skin was purple, with a light green pulpy inside. In fact, the inside texture resembled that of an avocado. It also had a large single pit in the center (shaped like a date pit). The flavor of the pulp was bland and starchy, and I don't remember the skin tasting too memorable either. It was served hot (roasted) and we ate it with the plantain. Anybody have any idea what this might have been?

    1. A big thank you to cimui for identifying the fruit--it is safou!

We really enjoy this fruit. Can anyone tell me where I might be able to find some in the Chicago area? I live in Uptown and we have asked a few African markets and they do not carry it.
