Great Individual Nachos? (not a messy pile)?

NAtiveNewYorker Sep 14, 2009 08:10 PM

Stone Creek on E 27th has great nachos because they are individual chips that stand alone with their own toppings. Not a pile of chips topped with a pile of stuff. Who else has these? Bar or restaurant. Dive or destination. Doesn't matter.

Bar 89 on Mercer serves nachos this way. I don't think it's all that, myself, but it has at least one rabid fan on this board. And Pop Burger serves "individual lobster nachos with guacamole" which sounds like it would be terrible, but it's not bad. Not worth the $20 they charge for it, though.

The nachos at Bar 89 are actually REALLY good. I haven't been in a year or two, but I remember them standing out and being quite authentic.

You're not even the rabid fan I was thinking of! Bar 89's version is too austere for my taste; I prefer my nachos to be a big sloppy mess. I guess I don't like authentic nachos.

Trust me, I was in total shock when they arrived before us. I was in more shock by how much I genuinely loved them! Speaking of sloppy nachos, have you had the ones at Professor Thom's?

No. I just checked out their website (which no one has attended to for quite some time), and they're not even on there. The Menupages menu says "not your traditional nachos." What does this mean? I hate mysteries.

They come out on a circular metal pizza tray and are piled high with goodness. Here's a great site for reference: http://nachosny.com/. Check out their online store where you can buy a t-shirt that says, 'Chos before Ho's."

I like the look of all that cheese, but the guac appears to be smooth as paste (bleah). But how are they not traditional? The sauce is in a little cup? That site is useful, although the typos hurt my eyes. Learn to spell, children.

I had the nachos at Professor Thom's last week. They are certainly voluminous (enough for three people, at least), but they aren't interesting in any other way. I ate a lot, but I wasn't thinking, "Wow, these are really good nachos."

Southern Hospitality (with the bbq pork) is one of the best nacho's I've had in while. It is a giant mess though but the only thing i could think of while eating them was "omg there are really good nachos"

El Cantinero, a mexican dive on University place does it this way and so does the Central Bar on 9th street and 4th Avenue.
