zeppoles at San Gennaro Feast
Once again I was disappointed by the zeppoles at the Feast. I don't know why I keep punishing myself like this. I looked for a stand that was making them fresh out of the oil, which very few were (most had been sitting around), finally found such a stand off Mulberry, and asked for the fresh ones. They still came out uncooked inside. Why do they have to make them so darn big? It's harder to cook well and through. Do they think that bigger is better? When I was a kid, they used to be smaller and much better. Since the guy was making them, maybe I should have asked for them well-done. I give up.

Forget the zeppoles. Braciole is the way to go at SG. Also Artichoke Pizza is opening Led Zeppole on 14th street soon which sounds like it's gonna be Zeppoles made with ...wait for it...A Whole Lotta Love..

Even worse, IMHO: the fried calamari. There's so much flour in the oil that it's being fried in roux, the oil is burnt from that flour and everything tastes scorched, and they're in such a rush that the squid is either overcooked & tough or undercooked and grainy from the flour.
In Italy you are never served such crap at street festivals.

I feel your pain and disappointment.....fwiw, I do not believe that quality has been associated with any food offerings at the San Gennaro Feast for quite some time. My problem with the Zeppoles is the overworked oil they use.
