I can't say that I look forward to eating in Whistler that much. Always seems to be a bit of a disappointment and wonder if it's just the overall quality or me.

La Rua
Dinner here with a large party of us. It was steady but pretty quiet here. We had gone with a prix-fixe menu here. 3 courses and coffee ended up costing about 55 each. Can I actually tell you what I ate there? No, it completely eludes me right now, that's how memorable the meal was. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't stellar either.

Ric's Grill
Another night and dinner here. We started out with cocktails, I had the Buddha Fix which completely reminded me of cherry cough syrup. Appies were calamari and spicy crab bruschetta. The calamari was ok to me but my DP's seemed to really enjoy it. I found the pieces of squid to be really small and therefore difficult to fork and eat. And the spicy crab was not spicy at all. Couldn't detect a whiff of spicy. I had the prime rib, was feeling carniverous. Perfectly cooked which was nice and came with a side of veggies which were quite nice and crisp and not overcooked mush. We split the king crab legs which were quite lovely. Nice tang of sea saltiness combined with the sweetness of the meat and we were in heaven, even without the butter. Overall, my DP's seemed to enjoy their meals but I found it a bit average.

La Brasserie
In between festivities, we hit this joint for some appies. Calamari, poutine and nachos. All were pretty decent sized dishes, the poutine I found the gravy a tad salty and it definitely wasn't hot enough to melt the cheese and sadly, the cheese did not squeek like proper cheese curds should. Nachos were nicely done with a good smattering of cheese, olives, jalapenos and tomatoes. Nothing spectacular. The calamari was better than Ric's Grill in terms of size but I liked the preparation at Ric's better. Simple with tzatziki on the side and chopped red onions. La Brasserie had squirted some mayo thing drizzle and capers other stuff. The plate was overdone but the calamari was fried nice and crisp.

That's all there is to Whistler, I had a couple of meals from the Four Seasons but I can't tell you if it was catering or the restaurant that prepared it so I will omit it. I can say that the food was delicious and probably the best of the meals that I ate in Whistler.

Thanks for the report, bda. So sad that Whistler rarely rises above mediocre foodwise. Doing a search here on it is a depressing experience. I dread when visitors ask for recs there...

Bearfoot is good but pricey....expense account pricey. Sushi Village is also good and fairly reasonable for Whistler. (Toshi's near Main St is run by one of the former owners of SV).

After the top of the Whistler eating pyramid (Bearfoot, Araxi), the drop off is pretty steep.

Yes, it is sad that the dining scene is a bit sad especially for such an international destination. Either you spend ridiculous amounts of money for the good stuff (and even then...) or you get indifferent food.

Just found this website and thought I would search for some posts on Whistler. I feel compelled to reply to this post as I have been living here for 10 years.

Our favorite place for dinner out hands down is the Rim Rock cafe. The $39 3 course special is just amazing. I highly recommend the caribou medallions, but the whole menu is fantastic. As far as the other end of the price spectrum we also have our favorite places to go. If you like burgers Splitz grill is the place to go. Want to be reminded of moms cooking? Then head over to the South Side Diner. The meatloaf is fantastic and mostly long time locals serving you. The Tandori Grill is amazing Indian food and priced reasonably for Whistler.

Because of our high turn around of seasonal staff service can be a little iffy sometimes in the village.

Thanks AD for some local insight. I've tried to make it to Rim Rock but get shot down each time (i.e. I wait until the last minute and then they're fully booked...bad planning on my part).
