I'm looking for apple picking in a idyllic country scene, with a good bakery, maybe a gift shop, some activities for the family, and most of all...a good variety of apples. Does this place exist in Northern Ma to Southern NH area? I'm willing to travel some too! Make it a day trip! Anyone?

Norway Hill Orchard in Hancock, NH is a nice, not too crazy, apple orchard with a great view of Mt. Monadnock. You could pick you apples and then head down the road to Peterborough, NH which has a quaint downtown with some nice shops and restaurants. If you've got little ones, you could also drive over to Dublin for a visit to Friendly Farm (nice little farm with an array of animals to pet for smaller children). You could also hike up Mt. Monadnock if you have the time and energy or, if not, drive to Pack Monadnock in Peterborough for a shorter hike.

      Brookfield Orchards
      North Brookfield MA

      Call ahead.

They have always had pick your own apples. I did it last year, but, you never know. Things change. It's a long drive out to the middle of nowhere. Quite wonderful. I love it.

I discovered Apple Crest, Hampton Falls, NH last year. they have tractor rides out to the orchards, petting zoo, entertainment, cider donuts, pumpkins, scarecrow stuffing, pies and other baked goods for sale.

We enjoyed ourselves we went back a second time.

I went there years ago and liked it. It can get crazy on the weekends. They have a harvest festival which can be fun, although far from quiet and idyllic.

In MA, I like Carlson Orchards in Harvard.

For more places, there's a good list at http://www.pickyourown.org/NH.htm and http://www.pickyourown.org/mass.htm

If you're willing to drive more than a bit, Allenhome Farms in South Hero, VT totally rocks. :)

I agree Applecrest in New Hampshire is a good spot for fall family entertainment.

If you're just purely after good apples, however, be advised that "pick your own" is a scam. The orchards generally pick the best apples to sell themselves and leave the lesser quality on the trees for the PYO'ers.
