Two great finds in Vernon
Spend a week in Vernon in August and found two great places on main street (Barnard). The first is a Mexican place that may be the best Mexican I have had in Western Canada. Los Huesos features beautiful tile work on the floors and in the bathrooms. The kitchen looked very clean. The menu has both traditiona Mexican and some more tex-mex dishes. We went twice and I had both enchildadas - once with roha sauce as a special with beef and once the regular menu item with standard red sauce and chicken. Both were very good. But it was side dishes that really set this place apart. I normally do not eat refried beans or the rice. There were both great. The complementary chipsa nd salsa were wonderful. They clearly make good use of the great fesh produce available locally.
The second place was about two blocks away. Margherita Pizza is the real deal. Hand tossed crusts, good choice of topping. They usually have pizza by the slice - Margarhita and one other, and a good long list of whole pies on order. I had the sharwarma pizza with lamb and it was amazing.
In a small city that seems other taken by chains, it was really nice to find to independents serving such good food.
