Coolinary Menu Report

  • 4

Here is our report of the three restaurants that we tried with the Coolinary Menu or other specials.
Ralph's On The Park-Would Not do this restaurant again.
The location is gorgeous and the restaurant itself is comfortable, but we were really disappointed in the food. We got the three appetizers with a glass of wine special. We had the turtle soup (just OK), the roof bacon salad (The best thing we had), jumbo shrimp (impressive looking, but somehow the cornflake crust was bizarre and stole the flavor from the shrimp), wild mushroom ravioli (lacked flavor), crab ravigote napoleon (a bizarre mix of flavors that did not enhance the crab) and baked oysters (dull). Appetizers are the favorite part of the menu for us and for us not to find something that said Wow was a disappointment.

Bacco-We finally made it here. It's been a long time coming and it was worth it. The corn and crab bisque was OK and we enjoyed the mista salad. I enjoyed the lobster ravioli and my wife really liked her pork loin. Next time we're getting the shrimp. They look Great!! The service was off, but I think they were short and I expect the service is usually good.

Pelican Club-Absolutely Love it and would recommend this place to anyone. It's a comfortable restaurant. Check the wine prices-you may want to get a bottle instead of by the glass. We usually get different items on the menu, so we can try different foods, but we both decided on the seafood martini. We were so glad we did. It was the perfect blend of flavors with the potato salad, the seafood and the sauce. This we now rank along with Muriel's crawfish and goat cheese crepes (known in our house as "Little pillows of Heaven) as the number one appetizer in the city. I had the fish with crabmeat which had a wonderful jalapeno hollandaise. My wife had the filet and raved about the truffled potatoes. Highly recommend.

  1. +1 Pelican Club - their Coolinary offerings have always been much more interesting and generous than most others.

bacco's $25 dinner special is great as well, but their service has never been impressive (post-K). one of the best BBQ shrimp dishses in the city.

For "Little pillows of Heaven," try Restaurant August's house-made gnocchi with crab meat and truffle oil with shaved parmesean. When we were there this past August, I ordered this in entree size. Best thing I have ever eaten.

    2. August's 4 course/$40 tasting, $60 w/ wine paring is wonderful.
