Anyone been to Mengrai Gourmet Thai?

Mengrai is quite good. Pretty setting. Definitely more upscale than the alternatives but the atmosphere is certainly not comparable to financial district restos (Canoe, Bymark, Red's, etc.)

Is Lai Wah Heen a short enough cab ride? Chinese, not Thai, but definitely upscale.

I second Wahooty's recommendation of Lai Wah Heen. Impeccable service and close to the core. I like Mengrai (foodwise superior to Golden Thai) but the service is too spotty and slow for me to feel safe in recommending it for a business luncheon.

Takesushi in BCE place has great sushi. Only thing: it's not the most aesthetically pleasing restaurant (certainly not as pretty as Ki - but Ki serves Keg-style sushi).

          Definitely Lai Wah Heen.

There are several good choices based on your criteria of upscale atmosphere and location. Golden Thai at corner of Church & Jarvis (I think) is beautiful. Not sure open for lunch. Ki is Japanese at 181 Bay. A hotspot. Beautiful decor. Also there's Nami for Japanse on Adelaide. Nami or Golden Thai my top picks. Ki is huge and not sure about service. These aren't Chowhound calibre, really, really, but meet the bill for high-end Asian ambience.
