Need help with Vietnamese Restaurant
I was in NOLA a couple of months ago and a friend took us to a Vietnamese restaurant that I loved but cannot remember the name. I thought the name was Than Dinh but cannot find it on any of the search engines.
All I remember is that it was about a 10 minute drive (max) from the Quarter and we crossed a bridge.
If no one can help with the name of that one, I have heard good things about Ba Mien (sic ??), has anyone heard or have opinions of that one?

Just returned home, (not all 2 1/2 weeks in NOLA, although that would not have been a bad thing! Did Grand Cayman and in Koo bah as well).
I want to thank everyone for their suggestions. Am very sorry to report that we made it to NO Vietnamese restaurant at all this time. Too many reasons to go into. Just my husband and myself will be returning to NOLA in early and again in late December and I will DEFINENTLY be trying at least 2 of those suggested. Am exhausted now but will follow up with a more detailed report. Did eat at Domenica, Rest. August, Cochon Butcher, Herbsaint, Pot o Call, Gautreau's, Lilette, Coops, Praline Connection, Sucre, Green Goddess..... and more..... -
You should try a Vietnamese po-boy sometime, too. My favorite is Dong Phuong in the East, but there's also Banh Mi Sao Mai down the block from DP and Pho Tau Bay on the Westbank.

re: midcity
There are 8 of us total cabbing it from the Quarter. How far are Ba Mien and Dong Phuong respectively?
Just to clarify, we are looking for REAL Vietnamese food, not a "Southern" interpretation of it (no offense intended). I just want to be clear we are not looking for a chefs "interpretation" of Vietnamese food.-

Not having been to Vietnam myself, I can't speak for the authenticity of the local restaurants. All I can tell you is that the workers are all Vietnamese and all the menus are written in Vietnamese, with the English translations of the dishes below it. Also, in some restaurants, such as Dong Phuong and Nine Roses, most of the clientele appears to be Vietnamese as well.

Just a thought, you can rent a car for the day for cheaper than a cab ride to the East would be. There's an Enterprise on Baronne St. near-ish the Quarter. You'd be able to take a nice leisurely drive and maybe check out St. Bernard Parish as well, without worrying about the fare.

or take a streetcar to Cafe Minh on Canal St.

a more upscale feel, but the food is fantastic.-
re: edible complex
Am in DFW now - just a couple of hours before I get to the first NOLA meal I've had in a couple of months!!!! I am sooooooo hungry but saving my appetite as we are meeting friends at Domenica as soon as we land.
Cafe Minh on Canal St. sounds very convenient, weather permitting.
Unfortunately, there are 8 of us, so renting a car won't work for us this time, however, it is a really good idea for future visits - so thank you!!

re: ccmurieta
Cafe Minh--very good, but upscale. The chef is Vietnamese, but uses a lot French technique, so the menu includes some of the standards, but it is a very different menu from that of Tan Dinh or Nine Roses or Kim Son. Great summer rolls, shrimp dumplings, a delicious Shanghai soup, but no phos, a take on bun, but not a selection of them. But the food is delicious; we eat there at least once a week. Note: Cafe Minh is not open on Sunday or Monday.
Hope you like Domenica too. We did.-

Cafe Minh's menu:

Dong Phoung has a bakery (with vietnamese po-boys, pastry, custards, bean and rice dessert with coconut milk among many others, candy, etc) on one side and a restaurant with bubble tea on the other (it's all open in the inside)

Ba Mien
13235 Chef Menteur Hwy
New Orleans, LA 70129-1808
(504) 255-0500Located in New Orleans East is IMO the best Vietnamese Restaurant in the city. They even had a booth at Jazz Fest there and were serving great spring rolls!!
Give them a try!

re: ccmurieta
Personally I don't think Kim Son is anything special. Nine Roses, on the other hand, is especially good for family style Vietnamese, but not so great for single dishes, like pho or bun. For N.O. east, it's really between Ba Mien or Dong Phuong...just really what you feel like that particular day. I think DP is better.
