We are staying on West 36th St., a couple of blocks from Madison Square Garden. Please help us with any nearby restaurants, with a nice atmosphere, that are reasonably priced. We would also like to visit one of New York's better steakhouses. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey, Dana1949,

When it comes to steakhouses, you are in luck because you are staying right near one of the city's best and my favorite: Keens! It has been in its 36th St. location, between 5th & 6th Avs. (closer to 6th) since 1885. Delicious steaks, chops -- the signature mutton chop is legendary -- apps, sides, and desserts. Service is excellent. With regard to atmospherics, the Old New York ambiance is unmatchable: walls filled with American memorabilia, row-upon-row of old clay smoking pipes suspended from all the ceilings, and pipes belonging to famous people dating back to the 19th century displayed in cases in the vestibule.

"Little Korea" is also convenient to your hotel. I've only been to Kung Suh, on the corner of B'way & 32nd St., for their barbecue, which was excellent. Perhaps other Hounds who are more familiar with the Korean restaurants there will chime in.

Other than Keens and Korean food, that neighborhood isn't exactly choc-a-bloc with really great restaurants, so you really should travel to other areas. If you are willing to do so, give us some specifics so that we can make appropriate suggestions.

How long will you be staying?
Are you interested in suggestions for breakfast, lunch, and brunch, as well as for dinner?
What are your cuisine preferences?
Do you want casual or fancy?
And most important, give us your per person *dinner* budget for *food only*, keeping in mind that you will have to add drinks, 9% tax, and 20% tip.

Thank you for your help. We'll be staying for 4 nights and we're going to try and keep our dinner budget under $100.00 for the two us. We know that the steakhouses could be a little more and that's fine. We're not picky when it comes to cuisine, so any help would be appreciated. We are willing to take a cab for a good meal. Thanks again.

Consider going to Madangsui for barbecue (galbi/bulgogi). It's on 35 St. between 5th and 6th, and it's a really good experience.

Also, go to Szechuan Gourmet on 39th between 5th and 6th for very good Sichuan food. Stick to spicy items. It's one of the best Chinese restaurants in Manhattan.
