Raj Palace now open in Calgary
Raj Palace just opened a few days ago in the same location as Mysore Palace. In fact, it is the same restaurant and same people, just a different name.
So, if you're looking for authentic South Indian cuisine, head on to Raj Palace.

Lunch buffet is $12.95 per person.
Decided to give it a try for dinner this past week. The place was VERY quiet, although we did get there a bit late (a little after 8). We were pleasantly surprised to see that they offer a dinner buffet, something I dearly miss from growing up in Edmonton. Pretty decent variety of dishes with quite a few veggie options. There was also an OK butter chicken and some pretty dry pieces of tandoori chicken. They had an interesting manchurian fish dish that had a pretty nice ginger flavour, unfortunately it was a bit too mushy for my taste. The rice was also a bit too soft. The naan that was served was made to order and pretty good. The waiter also brought out 3 small dosa's for us, it was a nice touch. While I'm not the biggest dosa fan, the crepe part was nicely done, thin and crispy.
They also had a couple of options for desert, gulab jaman and vermicelli (in a creamy sauce) - I'm not sure of the proper name for this as my mom would always just call it vermicelli whenever she made it. I anly tried the gulab jaman, and they were pretty good as well.
It was cheap, $12.95pp, but I thought the overall quality of the food was a bit lacking. Perhaps this will improve if the place gets a bit busier in the evenings. Given the location, I'm sure they are much busier at lunch time.
I think Surya's dinner buffet is better eventhough it is a bit pricier and there is not quite the selection that Raj Palace has.

I went here for the lunch buffet today and really enjoyed it. They had some so-so dosas and idlis, cauliflower 65, eggplant curry, a dry potato curry, lamb curry, butter chicken of course, rice, papadams, salad bar, chutneys, etc.
I particularly enjoyed the cauliflower and eggplant. The lamb curry was very tasty although the meat was tough. In general though it was a great buffet and I was very pleased with it. If I lived in Calgary, I would go there fairly often to get the southern style stuff. It's too bad south indian food is so underrepresented in the Indian restaurant scene.
