Hello. I want to try making homemade root beer and found a recipe in Saveur Magazine. I am having trouble finding the spices I need. I am looking for:

sassafras root bark
birch bark
sarsaparilla root

Community Natural Foods, Spice Land, Cookbook Company and Sunnyside Grocery do not carry these items. Does anyone have any other ideas of where else I should look?

I did a bit of googling and found Mountain Rose Herbs they carry all three ingredients you're looking for: http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/orde... - and they apparently ship outside the US (not often the case with a lot of online retailers).

I'd also check with weigh2go.ca AFAIK they're a Calgary co. their site doesn't mention the bark & root you're looking for but they may be willing to special order?

Good Luck - let us know if/where you get the required ingredients from and please, post your Root Beer making adventure on the Home Cooking Board :)

try spiceland on Fairmount drive in Acadia! They have way more things than I expect anyone to have in stock!
