Home-style cooking in Jesup, GA: Jones Kitchen or Sybil's Family Restaurant?
So I'm going to be spending some time down in the SE part of Georgia later this month to explore some backroads foodie haunts in that area for the first time. Depending on who you hear from, people say that either Jones Kitchen or Sybil's Family Restaurant is worth driving literally 100 miles each way for some righteous grandma-style down-home cooking.
My question is - if I only have the opportunity to try just one (and this might very well be the case), which one should I choose? Decisions, decisions.
Just wanted to add an update. I finally timed my Fl. drive so I could try Jones Kitchen. Excellent fried chicken! Very good sides tending toward the simplest of preparations. My only quibble was that the local cane syrup at the table was made partly from corn syrup. Tasted nice and smokey though!
Price has increased as of Feb. 2013 - now $9.
Made it down to Jones Kitchen for lunch today, and it really was some of the best country cooking I've had anywhere. The veggies were so super-fresh and tasted wonderful - stewed okra, fried okra, rutabagas, black-eyed peas, field peas and butter beans, turnip greens, green beans, squash casserole. The fried chicken was excellent too.
I have been to the Western Sizzler in Jesup several times and it is awesome and has a huge variety of down home southern cooking. I've eaten at other sizzlers and none of them can hold a candle to the one in Jesup. Went to Jesup with the intentions of eating at Jones Kitchen, It was closed. but was well satisfied with Western Sizzler. Two thumbs up and your cooks rock!!

I have lived here most of my life, and if you want that old down home southern country style cooking & feel with a huge selection on the buffet then you want to go to Jones Kitchen and they are only open for lunch they close at 2:00pm. As for Sybil's the food is great the atmosphere is more upscale they have a great Friday night seafood buffet & a wonderful Sunday buffet ........... so if you could try both Jones for lunch & Sybil's for dinner you would be in for a real southern treat :)
Never tried Jones Kitchen, but have eaten at Sybil's a couple of times when working in the area. Always thought it was extremely decent food, great fried chicken and southern vegetables. I understand thay have a really good Friday night seafood buffet, but have never been around on the weekend to try it.
Jesup is the city of southern-cooking buffets. There are 3 or 4 more there besides Jones and Sybil's.
For the true back-in-the-day experience got to Jones. Big buffet, long tables with cane syrup on each one. Killer fried chicken. Fried fatback.
Sybil's has excellent food on a smaller buffet and is more upscale in decor and service. Neither one is a bad choice.
