Monmouth or Ocean source for maiz chulpe

Bossa_Nova Sep 3, 2009 03:50 PM

I want to make cancha, the toasted peruvian corn and am trying to find a place in monmouth, ocean or even mercer county to buy the maiz chulpe, a special type of large kernel corn you use to make it. Anyone have any ideas?

I get the finished product at Super Pollo II in Brick. You might want to call them and see were they get their's. BTW, when you're done can I have some? :)

Funny you should mention Super Pollo II, it was after having it there for the first time that I began my quest to make it at home.

Success!! We found the maiz chulpe in Trenton at Food Bazaar.

They had several brands to choose from and we got the Peru Food brand. After heating some oil we toasted it in a covered pan while shaking for about 10 minutes. (kind of like making popcorn). Drained, added some kosher salt and we had Cancha. It came out exactly like at Super Pollo II. It was easy and tasted great.
