Can anyone suggest something for this weekend. There was nothing current on my search.
Thanks in advance.

What kind of food / atmosphere are you looking for?

Johnny's Reef has huge platters of fried seafood. It's decent - not great - but the best I've had on the island. In my experience the restaurants with more upscale aspirations tend to miss the mark.

The Black Whale is the best on the Island...it's where the local's go and has a great garden. If not the Black Whale then Arties or JP's (I guess)...

JP's bleech, never. Lobster House next door and Sea Shore say's this local. Black Whale is good for brunch and good in general but not a seafood house if that is what you are looking for. See my other posts for seafood hosue thoughts.

Lets be honest, most of the food in CI sucks from a purely culinary perspective. It's over fried, over red sauced and on the weekend don't get me started on the atmosphere. I'm not a fan of JP's either, but what choices do we have? Sea Shore is WAY overpriced for mediocre not that fresh food. Agreed Black Whale isn't good for Seafood but at least the food is decent and the garden is cute. Day boat Cafe in Irvington (I know not part of the outer boroughs) or spots in Manhattan are generally much better for Seafood...and I'd rather starve than go to Johnny's Reef.

We suggest that you try the restaurant at LIDO. Yes, we know that there is a catering hall attached to this place, but the restaurant is worth a visit. Enter on City Island Avenue near Pilot Street. Wine choice is red or white. Homemade pasta dishes (try the cavatelli with Broccoli rabe or the tagliatelli with mushrooms), fabulous veal, good thin-crust pizza. Portions are large. The rooms is harshly lit and the tables and chairs are right from catering central. Still, good food at a good price on an island that is filled with mediocre restaurants - LIDO is a real find.

I hve been to CI many times and as a life long NY ER I for one would love if there was good food there. I think I have been to every joint there and they all sucked. The place is so unique and special there needs to be at least one great seafood place there. Hey I have an open mind if I am wrong correct me I will try again. However remember I have been trying for over 20 years...

          Ciao-

I second bklynsausage's remarks. It's such a shame that there is no quality food on CI as it would be a great way to spend the day.

Thanks for the support Eat. Once again I was there last week and to no avail... I still keep hope that someone with an understanding of FRESH seafood would invest some money on the island.. It does not have to be high brow just good FRESH seafood...

I will not mention any names I do not want to burn any places... The staff needs to make a living..

              Ciao-

I'm so glad to have found this! I'm hoping to head to City Island this weekend. I've never been - is it worth it? All i've seen of it has been from Ed Burns movies, and it looks great. Ideally, i'd love to sit somewhere, get some decent seafood and copious amounts of cocktails. Any heads ups would be fantastic.

A major warning. There is only one through street in City Island. On a weekend this time of year it can take you almost an hour to drive the 15 or so blocks down to the end. There really are not any good restaurants, although Johnny's Reef (cafeteria style fried seafood with picnic tables) at the far end of the island is certainly a lot of fun.

The warning about the traffic is important. The traffic is often backed up after 3 PM on the weekends. (The restaurant at LIDO is only open for dinner, so this applies to my earlier post.)
And to be clear - the only reason to go to LIDO is if you are on the island and are looking for some better than average food. You do not go for the atmosphere or the view!
