German in NJ or NY

Still trying to find a good authentic German Restaurant in Nj or Ny area. It seems like all the old standards are gone, or they have healthified the cuisine. German is rich, heavy food, I want a place that still serves this way. Have been to several Manhattan "beer gardens" where drinking is the priority not the food. Even The Little Kraut in Red Bank, NJ is no more, they reinvented themselvesand their menu, was just there, it was gross.

Thank you, forgot about Helmers, went there as a kid, thought they closed up. I donot like Kirkers at all. Blackforest sounds good too. Thanks

Helmers had a bad fire a few years ago, they've been open for about a year now, maybe a little longer.

    2. Another fast one:

Prime Meats - 465 Court Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231 - Owned by the Frankies of Frankies Spuntino 457 fame just two doors down.

Oh, and I highly recommend Helmer's in Hoboken as well.

      1. Here's a new place for you to consider in Jersey City.....

Wow! sounds like a weiner, oops I mean winner. Thanks for the tip.

        2. I haven't been here yet but look foraward to trying it. It's on Staten Island.

          1. This is a topic that comes up a lot. If you have the time, also run a search of German restaurants on the Mid-Atlantic, Manhattan and Outer Boroughs boards. Make sure to set the search to go back 5 years.

Another Staten Island restaurant is Killmeyer's. I've never been so you might want to do a little on-line research.

If you want to go WAY upscale you could try one of these places in NYC:

This web site has some very annoying music so I suggest you turn off the sound if you spend a lot of time there.
