Tipping the server

The other nite, a few of us enjoyed a lovely meal at Beretta's in the Mission.
Marinated sardines were delicate. Broccolini sauteed with garlic was refreshing.
Risotto, outstanding.

But the server didn't give a hoot about us -- perhaps we weren't dressed hip enough? Perhaps he was just busy. I dunno.

But it made me wonder about how much to tip. And I'm curious to hear others chime in.

By "didn't give a hoot," do you mean the server ignored you, got your order wrong, didn't ask if you wanted another round of drinks, that sort of thing? That would lead me to reduce the tip, probably to 10%.
