Had a terrific meal here last night.. My Vietnamese experiences have been extremely limited. I have never been to Vietnam and most people who have, are quick to disparage New York's offerings. In fact, I can only say that a little restaurant in San Fran called Vietnam, might be only experience.. Sure I have had a summer roll or two at your all encompassing Asian Fusion spot.

Most of the time, when speaking about the cuisine of Vietnam, the conversation normally ends up on Pho. And though this sounds like a wonderful dish, last night, we did not want to have our first experience to be limited to a bowl of hot soup. Especially with the huge menu that Pho So has..

We walked down a flight of stairs to a small restaurant that was empty with the exception of a large table of people in the back.. It was comforting to see a large table of people speaking Vietnamese. Though, if you were a tourist and walked into a Sbarros, you would certainly see several large tables of people speaking English.. So I don't know if this is the best indicator..

We started with shrimp summer rolls. This was your basic execution. Lots of fresh mint, some noodles, some lettuce, a lot of whole shrimp.. It was good, though a little boring.

Next dish was wonderful. We ordered this raw beef salad that came with a wonderful hot dipping sauce.. Slices of barely cooked beef came on top of shredded lettuce, basil some nuts, some onions, chiles, and a lot of basil.. This salad was ridiculously good.. A wonderful dish.. Bo Tai Chanh was the name..

Next up we ordered a plate of sea spinach cooked with garlic.. The garlic was perfectly, perfectly, toasted.. The spinach was a huge ol plate.. It was so fantastic, that if this is the only thing they sold, it would be worth visiting.. A wonderful simple dish, perfectly prepared.

The last thing we ordered was a plate of frogs legs cooked in a a curry sauce with lots of onions.. Frogs legs were perfectly cooked, curry was rich and complex..

There are so many items still to try on the menu.. The owner is super nice and really helpful.. I highly recommend this place.
