What? You already have filé powder in your pantry? Try Whole Foods- Tasso can be subbed with pancetta if they don't have it.

I love to cook and have several hundred cookbooks and currently I am interested to dive into a little bit into Creole/Cajun (and related) cooking :)

Madri Gras in Point Loma has what you are looking for in addition to other ingredents. Prepare yourself it is spendy compared to La. You can also have it shipped from The Best Stop in Scott, La. for comparable price and better quality.

Great recommendation, I do a lot of cooking in the Cajun/Creole/NOLA genre they have been a good resource for everything LA (including Cafe du Monde and Community coffee). They usually carry hard to find items in the freezer: crawfish, alligator, boudin sausage, andouille (which is now available in almost every regular supermarket) and tasso. Also pantry items like Steen's syrup, creole mustard, Crystal hot sauce, and file powder. However, the last two times I have been to Mardi Gras they have been out of tasso. Although any type of ham could be substituted for tasso ham in theory, I have found that the complex flavors of the tasso spice sorely missing in flavor profiles of recipes that are made without it.
If tasso is available, stock up the freezer. Otherwise, I recommend these online:

Little typo up top my bad. It's a nice little market with a deli counter, their food is good, not earth shattering but good. If you have a muffaletta itch they will scratch it, and you can also grab a bag of Zaps (which I've been seeing a lot more of in SD). BTW their crawfish is the same brand as the 99 ranch, and it is $8 cheaper at the ranch.

I have personally witnessed the presence of tasso ham at Siesel's Meats and Iowa Meat Farm. Call before you go to make sure.
