2 week trip to Chicago need help
We want to spend 12 to 14 days in Chicago. I think a week in the city to see the sights and try the food. What is a good area to stay that is centrally located to the good stuff. We will have a car. The second week we want to go somewhere nice by one of the Great Lakes where there is also something to keep us entertained and well fed. All help is appreciated. Thanks
For your second week, I would suggest southwest lower michigan (on the Eastern shore of Lake Michigan). There are many great places to stay and eat and the beaches are actually nicer than in Florida. The water is crisp and clean. Great little markets and local dining from Union Pier up to Grand Haven.
Look at a map of downtown Chicago. It is bisected by the Chicago River, which then splits into a Y. South of the river is the older party of downtown (the Loop) which now is mainly a business district with relatively few hotels and restaurants. North of the river, between river and Oak Street Beach, runs North Michigan Avenue ("Magnificent Mile"), now the main shopping strip. Most hotels are along that corridor and on the side streets, also most shopping, most street life, many restaurants. Just west of there is "River North" with more hotels and restaurants. Most central and active location would be between the river and Oak Street Beach, between Lake Michigan and Wells Street. I direct friends and relations to Homewood Suites (Grand near Rush) because every room is a complete apartment, two meals a day included, indoor pool. Leave your car in the garage while you're in town as parking is a nightmare and public transportation is fine.
