it would help to know where you're located since chains vary by region.

have you called around to your local bakeries? many of them offer sugar-free or diabetic-friendly options, and something that was baked fresh in a smaller place will be better than a mass-produced item that has been sitting on a store shelf for weeks or months.

Thanks, goodhealthgourmet for the suggestion. I live in NC in the Charlotte area. So, I guess anything from Trader Joe, Hairs Teeter, Food Lion, or Aldis would be great.

hmm, well i know TJ's doesn't have anything, so you can scratch that off the list. unfortunately i have no frame of reference for Aldi or Food Lion. and it's been many years since i've been to Harris Teeter, but i vaguely recall that they had a pretty extensive bakery department. have you asked them if they can make anything for you? also, i know Whole Foods Market carries some diabetic-friendly items but i honestly have no idea if they're any good.

Personally, I'd go with a fresh fruit dessert, unless you know that the diabetic loves a particular sugar free cookie or pudding or something widely available. Melons and berries are in season in much of the US right now, and both are a great choice for diabetics. Cooking with sugar substitutes can be tricky, but if you want to give it a go, try this website: http://diabeticgourmet.com/recipes/Desserts/

Check your local Whole Foods (believe there's several in NC).

I get the sugar free creme wafers and some cookies at Big Lot's. Dollar Tree usually has a few different sugar free candies. Walgreens has the "dynasty" brand hard candies that I think are the best tasting. Quite a few items offered on Amazon, some with free shipping. Being diabetic isn't any fun.

I think every market carries Murray's sugar free cookies. Kroger also has pretty good no sugar added pies.

Harris Teeter does have the Murray's cookies, and I think in the bakery section some sugar free angel food cakes and others fresh baked. The BiLo in Greenville SC carries sugar free desserts of all kinds in the bakery (brand is Isabellas); not sure if the Charlotte BiLo does.
