Hanoi - La Verticale

I spent most of my time in Hanoi eating street food: every time I saw something I hadn't tried I'd try it. I did carve out some stomach space for a meal at La Verticale, since I wasn't sure I'd be able to find a good example of French-Vietnamese fusion in other parts of the world. I ordered 4 appetizers in order to maximize the number of different dishes I could try. They ranged from okay to brilliant.

On the okay end was the mackerel appetizer - I'm beginning to think mackerel is best in simple preparations such as sushi. The prawn spring roll was good, mainly because of the large fresh shrimp. Also good was an ocean soup containing more fresh seafood.

And lastly, the brilliant dish that led me to post about this meal, the seared foie gras. The foie gras itself was imported from France, but the pairing of the foie gras with daikon was unique. Most foie gras dishes I've had have been served with a sweet/tangy ingredient to balance out the richness of the foie gras. In this case the watery-ness of the daikon served as a perfect foil.

For dessert I had the lychees, which was served with almond jello and lychee ice cream. The combination of sweet/juicy/slightly bitter was tasty and a good example of a creative take on everyday asian food.
