An evening in downtown Knoxville's theater district....

Started out at New Knoxville Brewing Company, where we sampled their wonderful microbrews, including my fave, a red ale called "Alt." Skipped the standard pub grub on menu to save room for dinner...
Next was dinner two blocks down at Cairo Cafe. Started out with the fresh hummus and tzatziki dips with toasted pita points and then had perhaps the best grilled lamb chops I have ever had with some sort of pea-based dish and a side of nutty rice. Show this place some love, Knoxville! It is wonderful.
Finally, stopped for dessert at Coolato Gelato, where we sampled both the berry-pear sorbetto (which was yummy) and the zabaglione gelato (which was stellar), all washed down with foamy cappuccinos.
All in all, much better (and a better value) than the chain restaurant crap now being served in my former west Knoxville neighborhood!
Lived in Knoxville for 25 years now...and didn't realize there even WAS a theatre district! Glad that you found some things of value downtown.
If you haven't been downtown to the new Regal cinema or to an event at the Tennessee or Bijou Theaters, you have missed a great experience. Parking is free in the State Street Garage (evenings and weekends)and there is an outdoor escalator from State Street to Gay Street. Also The French Market, which closes early, has authentic French crepes. It is amazing to see all the people walking around and the sidewalk cafe atmosphere.
