Looking for high gluten flour

katedw203 Aug 28, 2009 12:43 PM

I recently moved to Seattle and am looking for high gluten flour so I can continue making my own bagels. I know I can order online from King Arthur's, but it's expensive. In my last city (Boston) I was able to find ridiculously cheap ($0.70/lb), bulk Lancelot high gluten flour at a food co-op. I checked the PCC in Fremont, and they didn't carry it, but I haven't tried any other locations.

Anyone have an idea where I can get bulk high gluten flour? Or small pre-bagged quantities for a low price??

See Big John's PFI for high-gluten flour in bulk.

Also, PCC carries KA High Gluten Flour, though the price may stun you.

Do you guys have Winco up there (I live in Portland)? If so, they have high-gluten flour in their bulk bins...

As a follow-up, the WinCo's that I know of are in Federal Way and Marysville.

Other places with bulk foods is Fred Meyers, QFC and the supermarket in Queen Anne sort of close to Seattle Center (I forget the name).

Any supermarket or healthfood store that carries typical brands like Bob's Red Mill or Arrowhead Mills will have it. If your local does not carry it, take the time to tell them and they will order.

Thanks all, for your great suggestions. Big John's PFI had exactly what I was looking for (unfortunately, they dumped the flour in an old pickle bucket, leaving a super pickle-y smell), but I'll be back when their new shipment comes in. And as a bonus, it was only $0.55/lb.
