    1. It's on the menu at Maneki Neko (Falls Church).

        1. blue ocean in fairfax has it, and it's awesome.

            1. Akasaka in the Van Dorn Station multicultural strip mall has Japanese curry katsu, pork or chicken. I think it's good!

                1. I think Dolce Bakery in Annandale. Its technically Korean, but Korean and Japanese style curry are the same. Actually I think the Koreans market it as "Japanese style curry." There are probably other locations in Korea town that sell curry.

                    1. If you are so inclined, you get get a block of curry at any korean grocery. It very easy to make and I would bet many of the places mentioned use the same stuff as opposed to making it from scratch. You add bunch of veggies (I like, carrots, onion, potatos, green onions), meat (I like beef, pork or seafood) and cook according to direction. It is a great fridg magnet type of dish. help to use what every I got.

One trick I learned this year, I watch my mom make this at the beach. At the end she added a table spoon of flour. Made it ticker. My friends and I were litterally scrapping the pot for the last morsel.

Soup... "made it ticker"? not sure what that is but, if you had to throw away the pot afterwards -- it must be something strong! (just kidding) :D

I've even seen the curry roux at Safeway, although it is much cheaper at the Korean stores. I've heard that making the roux from scratch is quite time consuming, so Soup is probably correct that most restaurants use a premade roux.

Cauliflower works very well with this, although it's not something a Japanese person would be likely to use. Adding an apple (chopped very finely or grated) also adds flavor.

seconded! japanese curry has a special, sweeter taste than other curries.
just buy the premade curry in the bag, or the blocks of curry "concentrate" and make your own.
                                cheaper and the same taste

Miso (a tonkatsu place in annandale) serves katsu kare (pork cutlet curry)

Whenever I've tried chicken curry at at a Japanese restaurant, it tastes indistinguishable from the S&B Brand Golden Curry you find in the supermarket. I've been using that brand for years and so has my mom. Although to my tastes, the Mild is too mild and the Hot is too hot, so I buy a block of both and cut them in half. Perfect heat, for me at least. Serve with a good Japanese rice to soak up every drop.

I read that the Japanese Curry House chain is expanding to Hawaii. Maybe they'll come to the continental United States at some point.

Have you tried S&B Medium-Hot? That seems (to my taste buds) to be halfway between Mild and Hot...and is the one I buy.

Curry House has a restaurant in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles...I was in Heaven.

I have used S&B and House to make it at home, but my wife doesn't like the smell.
