Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in the Tristate Area

Buffalo NY

Aloha! Coming to Buffalo for only 3 nights for a memorial service the last weekend of Sept.
I know, I know and I will......search the board for recs. but I was wondering what should I
not miss there? We'll probably have to eat with family most of the time but if we get some
time away what could anyone suggest? Thanks!

    1. Without knowing if you'll have a car, where you're staying or what cuisine you ike, it's sort of difficult to make recommeendations. You might want a true gourmand experience or great hotdogs...or not.
I'd suggest you go to http://www.buffalochow.com/ or http://www.cse.buffalo.edu/restaurant...
Both sites cover the Buffalo area food scene.

Duh! Sorry for lack of details! Too much going on thinking of the memorial service. We will have a car, we are staying at the Hampton Inn downtown. I'll look at the links your provided! Much
          thanks and a hui hou!

          • With a car, you will find Buffalo to be a 'twenty minutes to anywhere" city.

If you are coming to Buffalo for the first time, and would like to try quintessential Buffalo food, I would recommend these things...

"Buffalo Style" Chicken Wings - or when you are in town, they're just called "wings"
Anchor Bar is downtown and is attributed to be the inventor of Buffalo style chicken wings. The Anchor Bar's food is decent, if a bit touristy. Locals often prefer (and fiercely debate about) other restaurant's wings, and to follow that discussion search this board for 'best chicken wing.'

Beef On Weck sandwich - a roast beef sandwich served on a kimmelweck hard roll, often with horseradish. Schwabl's is the local favorite, but like wings, locals like to argue about who else has the best example. Again search this board for that discussion.

Sponge Candy - a molasses caramel flavored sponge crisp covered in milk or dark chocolate. Any good candy shop you pass will probably have sponge candy. Try and get some.

Loganberry Drink - A soft drink flavored to taste like a cross between raspberry and blackberry, it was invented at a now-defunct local amusement park Crystal Beach. The most common brand is Aunt Rosie's Loganberry drink, and can be found at several supermarkets and local fast-food joints like....

Ted's Hot Dogs - a fast food restaurant known for its charcoal broiled Sahlen's Hot dogs.
Order a foot long with everything, onion rings or curly fries, and a loganberry drink, and you are eating like a local.

Houdini is right, there are hundreds of great local restaurants in the Buffalo Niagara region. While the area may be known for the low-brow fast-food examples I listed above, be sure to try a few of the better dining establishments. Our area has a fiercely independent flavor, and you will find a lower-than-average penetration of corporate cookie-cutter franchise restaurants than you would find in other cities. For whatever the reason
( cold winter weather?) Buffalonians love to eat and drink, and our local chefs and food-service professionals deliver the goods.

            Some other favorite local joints...
Ulrich's Tavern - Buffalo's oldest tavern, serves German food on weekends.
            Oliver's - fine-dining favorite
            Hutches - bistro style menu
Left Bank - inventive menu, nice bar
Tempo - fine dining, great steak
Rue Franklin - Buffalo's best French restaurant
            Towne Restaurant - Greek diner
            Pano's - Greek diner
Original Pancake House - breakfast all day. Apple pancake or Dutch baby.
