Visiting: Need top mid-range restaurants

Hey Chowhounders,

I'm visiting in a couple weeks and am in the process of looking for two top-notch mid-range restaurants in Manhattan. As the bf hasn't spent much time in NYC, I'm also looking for something "quintessentially" New York, something with both fantastic food and great atmosphere. We like every type of cuisine and are open to any neighborhood. So my question is: what are your top 2 mid-range restos?

Thanks all!

  1. You need to narrow things down a bit- more specific about price, area and cusine. There are lliterally hundreds and hundreds if restaurants that would meet the vague requests in your post.

    1. Define midrange -- $50pp? $100pp? How much are you willing to pay? Does that include tax, tip, drinks? Sounds like you want something that's a sit down restaurant, maybe a little nicer? Many quintessential NY places are not. Any cuisines you DON'T like to eat? Where are you coming from? NYC is not that strong in some cuisines like Thai, Mexican. What exactly do you mean by fantastic food and great atmosphere (like modern/sleek decor or upscale/formal/lush or a sceney crowd or something quirky and homey)?
