Sourdough problem

I made a starter last night and a lot of recipes say to cover it but I read a few that says you don't have to so I didn't. Now there are black spots in them. Kinda like...black pepper...is that okay? If not can I just skim the top and cover it next time? Or any solution that doesn't mean I have to start over again?

Was this started from nothing - just flour and water - or did you have some "seed" starter that you were growing? The only thing I can think of is mold, which seems unlikely to sprout overnight. Unless there were a precious ingredient in there, I would pitch it.

Yea...just flour and water nothing black at all...

Damn, I hate starting over, I'm very impatient.
