Good and Inexpensive Restaurants in Munich?

My wife and I will be in Munich next week and are looking for some recommendations for restaurants serving a good meal at a fair price. I am thinking along the lines of $20 each (not including wine). We are staying in the city center right across the street from the Hofbrau Haus, so that will be one meal. Any suggestions? Any little hole-in-the-wall that you know of that is just so unbelievably good you can't imagine why everyone doesn't go there?

  1. For a nice Munich-experiende, weather permitting, try one of the big beergardens. (Chinesischer Turm, Hofbräukeller, Augustiner, Seehaus)
Alternatives for rain are Weisses Bräuhaus, Nürnberger Bratwurstglöckl or Andechser, all around the Dome.

    1. We had a wonderful meal while exploring the fresh food market.Vituelmarkt(?) There is a small restaurant selling wonderful soups with fresh bread in the center of the market place. Wonderful place to explore also.

      1. Der Pschorr is most excellent for food and beer and definitely not expensive. It's right next to the Viktualienmarkt, so it's central. Don't miss their Roulade. It is seriously the best I've ever had.

I just tried El Gordo Loco on the weekend and really liked it. If you are looking to eat Mexican, I would recommend it, as it's the best I've had in Europe. Very inexpensive, but make a reservation, as the restaurant is small and understandably popular.

Pasta e Basta is hardly high Italian cuisine, but it might be the cheapest restaurant(s) in Munich, and considering the price, the food is pretty decent.
