Big Italian Heroes Near Brooklyn Heights?

We are looking to get some enormous heroes (3 feet long, 4 feet long...that kind of thing) in DUMBO. Any suggestions as to where we can find good ones?

Thanks in advance.

Note to the OP, that this is in Brooklyn Heights and not DUMBO. I don't know of any places in DUMBO that do that.

Lassen and Hennigs is really mediochre. Standard deli stuff with no surprises. Not horrible, just not chowhound-worthy.

Well then, what is chowhound worthy?

Outside of listing every restaurant I like, I'll simply take your remark as rhetorical.

The subject is Big Italian Heroes. I'm sure not every restaurant you like has them.

      2. Depends how far you are willing to travel. My favorites are Joe's Perette in Carroll Gardens and Defonte's in Red Hook. Joe's is on the F Line, 3 stations away from DUMBO.

If we are extending beyond DUMBO, I would agree with Defonte's. Also, Esposito's on Court Street. I have had their regular heros and I believe they will also make 3-4 foot heros. If we're really extending beyond the neighborhood, I would say Sal, Kris and Charlie's in Astoria, but that's nowheer close in proximity.

If you're willing to look in Carroll Gardens, maybe also try calling Los Paisanos Meat Market on Smith Street. I've had their regular heroes and they are fantastic.

I think Espositos is excellent. Liked Defonte's a lot too, but not signficantly more fabulous to merit the trip unless you're heading down there anyway. I just had Esposito's Italian combo hero on Wednesday with hot and sweet peppers. YUM.

          2. Thanks for all of the suggestions! For convenience, mostly, we went with Lassen & Hennigs. Also for price, since Defonte's was almost twice as much.

I must say that the sandwiches were far better than expected. Not Defonte's level (I've had theirs before), but quite good. I'd recommend as a solid party sub for anyone who's interested. Good people to deal with there, too.
