inexpensive birthday dinner
I'm taking a friend for a birthday dinner and am a bit low on budget. Can anyone recommend a place that has great food for around $65 for dinner for 2? Location can be anywhere, and any type of cuisine is ok.

$65/2 = $32.50/1, right? Or do you mean $65 apiece? Either way, you have to ask something more specific, because the number of restaurants that fit either criterion is vast. One thing that would be helpful would be for you to specify what kind of atmosphere you'd like. Hip, with a younger crowd? Sedate and civilized? Loud and trendy?

Thanks, Pan... Yes, I meant $32.50 each. Something on the hip side is probably good. Sedate and civilized doesn't sound all that festive. Not so loud that we can't hear each other speak.

Some of the places I frequent in the East Village may please you, such as Supper or Cacio e Vino. Frank is another possibility. I'd also recommend Momofuku Ssam Bar, but it might stretch your budget too much.

All the spots by Frank (Frank, Lil' Frankies, and Supper) are great and really well priced....that would be my vote.

I've consistently gotten out of Alta for $60 for two, for 5 small plates. I think the atmosphere would also fit what you're looking for.
