best baguettes near Los Feliz??

JPomer Aug 24, 2009 09:59 AM

Can anybody recommend a place to buy the freshest, best baguettes near Los Feliz or Silver Lake? I'm not a fan of the La Brea Bakery ones in the markets as they tend to be too hard. I'm curious to know if LA Bread makes a good one, or if anybody can recommend the ones at Say Cheese or Silver Lake Wine and Cheese? Or somewhere else I don't know about???

It's been a while since I've lived over there, so I'm not up on all the new places, but I've been happy with the ones at the Cheese Store of Silverlake.

You might like Buona Forchetta, available at Gelson's. It's not great, but it's softer than La Brea Bakery and gets a decent crust (one that breaks into fine shards, not croutons that can break break a filling) after 5-7 minutes in the oven. My favorite in LA is Breadbar but they don't make sourdough - grrr. Can't find anything close to Acme bread here...

Ralph's used to carry baguettes from Grace Bakery that were quite good. Now, they are making them under their house brand and putting them in a bag that mimics the look of Grace. It's a very good, rustic style baguette. My only beef is that it is priced a bit high at $3.99.

i'd stay away from LA Bread- i've been there a few times in the past couple of weeks really wanting to like it, but haven't walked out of there happy yet. the baked stuff is just too dry. ditto on your opinion on la brea bakery baguettes. finding a good baguette has been a mission of mine since i came back from paris. Europane in pasadena i'm told has a good one, but that may be too far to travel from Silverlake area.
