The Next Iron Chef - ???

r
rocks67 Aug 24, 2009 09:58 AM

I did do a search and did not find another topic on this yet.

What the HELL??? Are they eliminating one of the Iron Chef's or adding to an already bloated panel of cooks?? Seems like we only get to see Flay and Morimoto these days on the challenges. I think there was a new Symon challenge recenlty, but that's about it.

And did anyone see the list of potential chefs? Amanda Freitag? Like she doesn't get enough exposure on "Chopped." I am liking that Nate Appleman is on there - one of my fav chefs (love his A16 cookbook).

I"m interested in other people's comments.

The list is already bloated, as stated. Batali needs to start making appearances or stop being an IC. Flay is Overrated. Morrimoto is good. Cora NEEDS TO LEAVE -- she just isn't that talanted. Symon is really the only one who regularly appears right now worthy of watching.

This new group seems ok. The guy that won the past two challenges may be good. Amanda seems like she might be good. And I like Appleman's food -- I've had it at A16 many times. That said, he isn't a *star* chef. I'm not loving most of these chefs on this new season. Maybe someone will impress me yet...

They need to rework the whole iron chef. Get all new IC and get judges that know what the hell they are talking about. This can easily be the best food show but food network has to ruin everything. Next Iron Chef is a great show it's just iron chef that annoys me.

I don't really think it matters who wins or loses. It is after all just a TV show. The judges are fine as far as I'm concerned. I would rather have them entertaining than not. After all, even the Japanese version had cute actresses and a fortune teller for crying out loud.

True that, but they could leave off "judges" that wouldn't know their own ass from a country ham. There seems to be a lot of that going on this last season.

Maybe it's because 99% of the challengers "pick" Flay or Cora, the two weakest ICs. As far as I'm concerned, Morimoto's the only one that really interests me any more, although I do watch the show regularly.

How genuine is the 'pick'? Obviously it's not done right before taping, but I wonder just how much say the challengers actually have in matter. My suspicion is that the choice is determined as much by the availability of the various ICs, and the producers' ideas of what would make 'good TV'.

Maybe they are finally going to admit that Mario Batali is not on the show any more. Ever since it was reported that he was leaving the Food Network he hasn't appeared but is still in the opening sequence.

That's funny...I was thinking the same thing about Batali! For that matter, Morimoto isn't on that often either...

and Cat Cora was never qualified to be an IC in the first place.. Ya she's apprenticed under some great chefs and appeared as a judge on some random FN contests. But has never really ran her own kitchen as far as I can tell.

She's the IC Italian of this group...

Well, she definitely has a lot of restaurant experience. But these days she seems to be more of a "spokes-chef". I wouldn't be surprised if she left or cut back her schedule considering that she and her partner gave birth to sons this year.

Don't get me wrong, it's obvious she has very good technique. It's the way she writes her menus, the flow from course to course that betray her inexperience

I was sort of thinking that maybe they would just up the total of Iron Chefs to 6. I agree, I think Cat will be slowing down her appearances on IC due to her and partner now having 4 youngs sons. Not that women can't raise that many kids and still have a full time gig, but she's got her hands in quite a few different pots right now.

And is Batali really off of Food Network? Or have they just scaled him back? I know they took Molto Mario, one of my fav shows, off the air.

The IC's are losing their distictivness. BF is what? IC Southwestnabitofspain? KC is IC greeknsouthernfood? Only MM and MB mostly stick to their guns, but Mario isn't around much, and Morimoto is the rodney dangerfield of the group. Who's the other dude? I've never seen him since he won the last IC casting call. (which Besh should have won! He would have been a breath of fresh air.)

Batali hasn't shot an episode in a couple of seasons now. Morimoto is interesting but loses half the time, I think it's because of him that they stopped showing their records at the beginning of the show. I could see either one or both of them leaving to make room for someone new.

Michael Symon has been very good on the show.

I love Batali and would be surprised if he does leave the Food Network. Or has left

We attended the Time Talk with him during the Food and Wine festival and he has a LOT on his plate right now.

He is preparing for a 60,000 sq ft grocery store in NY to open fall next year called Eatly, working on a new food series around Italy (like the one he did with Paltrow in Spain) and he has been trying to open a restaurant in Rome...not to mention he and Joe (his business partner) have an Culinary Empire to run

Batali is IC Awesome but No Longer There
Cora is IC Overmatched but Female and on staff already

He had 15 wins, 7 losses, 1 draw. 68.2% wins, the lowest winning percentage of all 7 Iron Chefs from the original show.

I thought it looked like a great group of chefs...I'm looking forward to it as I'm getting pretty bored seeing Flay and Cora all the time.
