Second the East Village location. I buy many spicesand Madagascar peppercorns there. Have always been fresh and good prices too. I have the card someplace but can't seem to find it now that I need the name . .

              Dual Specialty Store
              91 1st Ave, New York, NY 10003

          2. Penzeys in the market at Grand Central Station is good and convenient.

            1. Chelsea Market has cardamom pods -- not sure if they have cardamom seeds. I also find their prices for spices to be better than most other places.

I am in agreement about their pricing. Cardamom as a spice isn't all that random. It's a common ingredient in desserts and Scandinavian cuisine. The bottle I'm currently using I purchased at Fairway, but could easily have also retrieved from Whole Foods and probably even Food Emporium (at least in its powdered form).
