Abalone in Northern VA

link_930 Aug 23, 2009 05:05 PM

Where can one obtain fresh, shelled abalone in Northern VA? I've tried all the likely suspects, including Maine Ave (close enough), H Mart and other chain grocers...

Thanks so much for your input!

I've seen the live, shelled abalone in a tank at H Mart at the corner of Lee Hwy and Gallows. They are small, and go for about $7 each.

Would not an abalone out of it's shell be a dead abalone?

        I meant in its shell.

I rolled by HMart again today and the dead frozen ones in their shells are $12.99/lb.

You're on the wrong coast for abalone. Squid steak, which I've seen frozen at Trader Joe, is a poor man's approximation of abalone and quite good on its own.

*Sigh. Moved here from the west coast, and still realizing the depths of my ignorance. Biggest shock: having to pay for avocados and limes...

Super H Mart in Fairfax has them. I was their today and there was a large display over ice. I did not take note of the price though.
