Old-School Italian in S.F.

I'm looking for recommendations for Old-School Italian Restaurants in San Francisco. What I want is food similar to Joe's of Westlake but in the city with a bit more charm. Thanks.

  1. I think Little Joe's is the only remaining "Joe's"-style place in SF. I haven't been to its latest location so I'm not sure how it stacks up against Westlake.

Alas, the charm is gone at the new location.

Perhaps the Gold Mirror may be closer to the OP's mark?

    2. More charm? Not sure if that can happen but you might try Capp's Corner or Gold Mirror on Taraval. Capp's is more homey and Gold Mirror more "opulent" in an old school way.

      1. Marcello Ristorante at 2100 Taraval very charming and old-school.

Marcello and the Gold Mirror are both good recommendations. Trattoria Contadina (on Union St.) is also a possibility.

        2. If you want old-school Italian and don't care that it's not Joe's-style, Capp's Corner is a good choice. It's one of only two of the old-school North Beach places still in business.

Thanks all for the feedback. I ended up at Capp's Corner last night. We had a great dinner. I went without much further research and was not expecting the Family-Style soup and salad starters. It was fun and the pure volume of food even surpassed Joe's. Overall a positive experience. I'll go back again. Looking forward to trying your other suggestions. Keep them coming...

          2. Sodini's in North Beach is old school Italian-American to the max. Pictiures of the Chairman of the Board are hanging along with the rest of the Rat-Pack. It's crowded every day when they open. I like the pizza, and the lasagna will send you home quite full and satisfied.

(Sodini's) Green Valley is the other old-school North Beach place that's still in business.

Hard to believe we're down to two in NB! This is driving me crazy -- can you remember the restaurant(s) that is now Mona Lisa?

                  Luigi's. It was a "Joe's"-style place.

Thanks so much! Back in the day, the best... along with Mike's Pool Hall.
