Corton vs. Ko

I have reservations next week at both places for my girlfriends b-day and am trying to decide between the two. Which would you recommend?

    If you're able to get a res at Ko, it is by FAR a superior meal. It rivals some of the best tasting menu's i've ever experienced - up there with Le Bernardin, et al.

      I wouldn't necessarily say that. Paul Liebrandt is an exceptionally talented chef and one of the most exciting working in New York. At its best, Corton is able to deliver a four-star type meal. The food there is certainly not traditional French, as there are many unusual and unorthodox flavor combinations. And there's no question that the wine list at Corton is far, far, far better than Momofuku Ko's, especially at the high end.

      That said, Momofuku Ko is a tricky reservation to get. Both restaurants are great, and I think it just matters what you're looking for. If you think you'd have a hard time getting another reservation at Ko, I'd probably go there. If you're looking for a more formal outing, you'll want to choose Corton.

        We haven't been to Ko, so I can't comment on the food. However, I agree completely with you about Paul Liebrandt and the sensational cuisine he is serving at Corton.

        I have no desire to go to Ko. However, as you indicated, it is a much more difficult reservation to snag at this point in time than Corton. So, since the o.p. has managed to snag one, he and his g.f. should go there and leave Corton for another time.

              Wooden, backless benches and a cockamamie reservations system.

                As you all know I dine alot at Ko, and I agree about the backless wooden seats. (They are difficult to maneuver if you're short like me, and they do hurt after 3 hours). I saw they did have one seat (I think it needs to specifically requested in advance) that does have a back to it. I couldn't tell whether it had a cushion on the seat though.

                  Three hours on an uncomfortable backless wooden bench?! Imo, that is the perfect definition of a "glutton for punishment"! lol

                    Kind of like the seats at Ssam bar. Don't care for those much either lol.

                      I think the way the menus at Ko and Ssam Bar are structured makes a big difference. At Ko, it's only tasting menus and, acc. to the website, you have to commit to either two or three hours of sitting on those benches. At Ssam Bar, other than doing the Bo Ssam, you can, if you wish, have just a few plates in a fairly short period of time.

                      The Bo Ssam was my first time at Ssam Bar, and I got lucky in that I was sitting on the bench up against the wall, so it wasn't too bad. I do intend to return sometime and sit at the counter, but I don't plan on spending two to three hours there. And it will definitely be at a time when it isn't busy because once that place fills up, the noise level is INSANELY HIGH!
